Song of Storms (Zelda: Ocarina of Time)

Hey there folks,

Here is another addition to the Zelda Soundtracks. It seems as though video game music is becoming a part of the pop music canon for young students. Throughout the years I've had several young musicians ask to learn themes from games and Zelda has been the most common request.

Here is the Song Of Storms. It's in a rhythm of threes. I feel it has two unique strong beats, which puts the time signature in 6. There are a few different rhythms here. 1/8 notes get the pulse of the metronome. 1/16th notes are the subdivision and the 1/4 note is the long note.

It's in the key of D minor, but uses accidentals outside of the key to give it an older feeling. This scale is called the harmonic minor scale. There are two accidentals to watch for. Bb and C#. The C# makes our A chord major. That major chord on the 5th scale degree enforces the feeling of D being home.

D E F G A Bb C# D

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

I've written out both the harmony and the melody part. All of the chords are shapes that we'll see in other songs, so it's worth learning the harmony. You could play this on piano with two hands, or treat it as a guitar duet. I would encourage you to learn both pieces.

You can download the sheet music here. As always, take your time, enjoy the process and keep playing.

Christopher
