Music is more than a collection of songs, techniques, and exercises. It is a language—something we learn through listening, imitation, experimentation, practice, and expression.

My goal as an educator is to help students understand that language well enough to make increasingly independent musical decisions: to hear more clearly, practice more intentionally, play with greater confidence, and develop a musical life that can continue evolving for years.

Approach

Musicianship develops through a cycle.

PRACTICE → PERFORMANCE → REFLECTION → MINDSET → PRACTICE

Practice is where we investigate. We isolate problems, develop skills, test ideas, and turn intention into reliable ability. Performance gives practice a purpose. Whether on stage, in a lesson, in a recording, or simply playing a piece from beginning to end, performance reveals what has actually become available to us.

Reflection turns experience into information. What worked? What broke down? What did we hear or feel that we hadn't noticed before? Mindset determines what we do with that information. Curiosity, patience, courage, discipline, and self-trust allow us to respond constructively rather than simply judging the result.

Then we return to practice with better questions.

Private Study

Private study begins with the music you want to make and the musician you want to become. Rather than following a fixed curriculum, we identify the skills, knowledge, and habits that will move you toward those goals and build our work around them.

Lessons may move between technique, repertoire, ear training, theory, improvisation, reading, composition, arranging, recording, and performance. The instrument is part of the process—not the boundary of it.

What is it like to start?

Getting started with a new craft can be full of excitement and uncertainty. Regardless of age, I want to empower students to understand what they want from their relationship with music. Together, we'll explore different methods and find an approach that fits your learning style and goals.

Students are often more motivated when they have agency over the direction of their studies. Early on, we'll focus on developing a shared vocabulary and fundamental techniques. Gradually, we'll foster your sense of taste and musical identity.

I like to joke that my goal is to teach myself out of a job. I'm not interested in creating clones of myself. Success means that eventually you have the tools to orient yourself, make your own decisions, and continue progressing along your own path.
