Advanced Strumming Patterns in Dreamsicle: Jason Isbell

Updated: Oct 5, 2020

Hey there folks, Here is a great tune from Jason Isbell's new album called Dreamsicle. Give it a listen here.

One of the features that stands out about this song is the opening guitar riff. I had a student listen to it and they described it as chords and a riff happening simultaneously. He was spot on. The opening pattern is switching between a D power chord and a pentatonic pattern happening underneath. The pattern opens and closes with the melody resolving up and then down.

It'll take some time to get the fingering together. I use my thumb in my right hand to play the lower melody. Try to play the D shape in the left hand without your index finger. This will enable you to play the melody pattern on the A string.

The chorus also has some really tasty choices in it. The form is uneven, which means that the chords change at different times in the two phrases. This is embellished upon later in the second chorus.

Make sure to give it a listen. The entire album "Reunions" is a great work. Consider adding it to your collection.

Enjoy the process and keep playing.

Christopher
