Looking at Everything I Wanted by Billie Eilish

Updated: Oct 5, 2020

Hey there everyone,

I wanted to give a piano lesson on a popular song by Billie Eilish. You can listen to the original here.

There are a couple of things that are unique about this song. First, look at the key signature. It's in the key of A major. That said, A major is never played throughout the song. 1) I would start by practicing the A major scale. Label and number all the scale degrees.

2)Then, identify the chords. Spell and label them. What position do they appear in the scale?

3) The first iteration of the progression uses the chords in the left hand. This is a simplified version of the second iteration where the chords appear under the melody in the Right Hand. Notice the octave treble clef, everything in the right hand is down an octave.

4) The second iteration is an except and adaptation of the second verse (2:08 in the recording)

The left hand is now implying the chords. Look at the arpeggio patterns and see if you can identify the chord tones you labeled in the 2nd step.

5) The final iteration is a full representation of the 2nd verse. Arpeggios in the Left Hand while the chords and melody are in the Right Hand.

Remember to practice all of these slowly until it feels natural. Then bring up the tempo until you hit the recorded tempo of 120 bpm.

Enjoy the process! Keep playing!
